For anyone thinking about doing this thing, unraveling your life of 24 years and starting over in a foreign country, you know, just that simple little thing, I do have some practical advice.
The first thing you need to get done is get a big bottle of Chardonnay and drink it. No, just kidding, (kind of). But you do need to acquire a mobile phone. I had no idea how everything is tied to having that as a communication lynch pin. You can't do anything without it and we just stumbled into doing that first on Saturday because the Telstra store was open and the bank was closed. Dumb luck!
But now we have mobile phones, a secured Internet source, and a bank account. I would also say that bringing a good stash of good cold cash from the U.S. helped in getting that bank account open without delay. Another thing, be sure to have a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, that saves you a bundle. Oh, and a shout out to my brilliant son JP, who asked us if we had checked which credit card covered the insurance on a rental car. After making a call or two on the way to the airport we learned that our Master Card had that benefit and we saved $39 a day on rental car insurance just by using that card. Awesome!
We are now at the Best Western, Bundaberg, courtesy of Widebay Hospital System. http://www.bestwestern.com.au/Bundaberg/hotels/best-western-bundaberg-city-motor-inn/
It's a clean, friendly, motel about 5 minutes from where John will be working. We'll be here until 1/7 when we move into a house. Stay tuned!
Look at the full moon! Shout out to Meg!
Love this! ... want to hear whether Venus Williams is able to return your serve. Cheers! Theresa
